Do This to Help Your Patients Stay Committed to Long-Term Dental Care

Apr 30, 2024

Did you know that fewer than 15% of all patients follow their doctor's orders? Maguire's work shows that only 15 to 16% of patients get their teeth cleaned every three months after periodontal therapy.

Performing surgery without subsequent care is worse than no treatment at all. As healthcare providers, what can we do?

This is what I do: after I present the treatment plan, I say, 'This is the treatment plan we're going to follow, but I need your commitment.'

Patients might respond, 'Okay, what does that involve?' I want you to commit to getting your teeth cleaned every three months. Can you do that? Sometimes they say yes, sometimes no. But regardless of their response, I explain the importance of long-term care and what the data shows us. Then, I get them to say, 'I, John Smith, commit to you, Dr. Michael Sonick, to get my teeth cleaned every three months for the rest of my life.'

It might sound silly, especially when I say it to a 65 or 70-year-old man who is the CEO of a corporation, to commit to getting his teeth cleaned every three months. But if I don't do it, who will?

Isn't it our responsibility as healthcare providers to clearly communicate what patients need to do to maintain their teeth long-term and keep their mouths healthy?

It's to their benefit. It shows that you care for them and are being honest with them. And isn't being open and honest with our patients so they can stay safe for years to come the most important thing?

Be a gift to everyone. Tell your patients about the importance of long-term care.
